From a Kitchen Table to a Community Pillar: The Founding of the Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission
In the autumn of 1995, Andy and Pat Gervais were busy volunteering with Meals on
Wheels in Amherstburg, Ontario. Their efforts brought nourishment to many, but they
quickly uncovered a gap that left them unsettled—no meals were provided on
weekends. Recognizing the need, the Gervais’ took it upon themselves to act.
From their home kitchen, they began preparing hot meals every weekend, ensuring no
one in their community went hungry. With the help of a dedicated group of ten
volunteers, they delivered an average of 20 meals per day to those in need. The warmth
of their food was matched only by the compassion behind each delivery.
But as time went on, Andy and Pat noticed something troubling: many of the people
they served were isolated, with little to no social interaction. The Gervais’ understood
that true nourishment extended beyond food—it also meant connection and
companionship.
In 1998, an opportunity arose when the Amherstburg Kinsmen offered the Scout Hall as
a venue for social events. Embracing this chance, the Gervais’ launched a weekly
Thursday lunch and fellowship program. What began as a simple meal evolved into a
cherished gathering of 35–40 people each week. Guests shared stories, laughter, and a
sense of belonging. The Gervais’ even organized special outings for their Thursday
group, including trips to the Detroit Zoo, Pelee Island, movies, and Christmas light tours,
further enriching their lives.
By 1999, the Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission was officially incorporated,
formalizing its role as a cornerstone of the community. A year later, the Mission moved
into its current location, a permanent home where its vision could continue to flourish.
Andy Gervais served as the Mission’s president until 2004, tirelessly leading the
organization with the unwavering support of his wife, Pat. Together, they embodied the
heart and soul of the Mission. In 2004, Tim McAllister took over as president, bringing
his own dedication and passion to the role, supported every step of the way by his
equally devoted wife Violet.
What began as a modest effort to address a weekend need has grown into a vital
community resource that not only feeds the body but also nourishes the spirit. The
Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission stands as a testament to what is possible
when compassion and determination come together.
